Romans 12:2 says “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. ” (NLT)
2 Corinthians 10:5 says “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (NIV)
You know, renewing your mind is something that is talked about in the Christian world alot, but I have always struggled to do. At times, I have even thought, I don’t NEED to do that.
As a teen I heard my youth minister say many times, things like “trash in, trash out.” But I didn’t think I was putting much trash in. I thought this only applied to the music I listened to and the tv shows and movies I watched and the books I read. And since I didn’t allow “trash” in that area, I was ok.
However, I am learning that renewing my mind IS something I need to put into practice. I NEED to be taking thoughts capitve. And why? Because where and what I allow my mind to dwell is just as important as the music/tv/movies/books I allow myself to be entertained by. I need to think about TRUTH. I need to pause my thinking to make sure it is true, noble, lovely and admirable (Philippians 4:8) and if it is not, then its TRASH!
